Top 6 DIY Home Hacks for National Preparedness Month

As a DIYer, I know that preparation is key when it comes to home safety. This September, let’s focus on simple home hacks that can help you be prepared for anything. Here are my top tips to keep your home safe and sound:

1. First Aid Kit Check

Your first aid kit is one of the most important tools in any emergency. This month, make sure to check your kit for essential supplies like bandages, antiseptics, and pain relievers. Replace any expired medications and replenish items that are running low. Having a fully stocked kit means you’re ready for any minor injuries or medical emergencies.

2. Back-Up Power Solutions

When storms hit, having a reliable power backup is critical. Solar-powered generators are a fantastic, eco-friendly way to stay powered up during an outage. They’re easy to use and can keep your essential devices running when the grid goes down.

Larger units like Jackery 2000 Plus Kit Backup Solar Generator, paired with an extra battery pack, offers up to 4kWh capacity, expandable to 24kWh are great for whole home solutions, while the Patriot Power Sidekick from 4Patriots, weighing only 8 pounds is great for powering you on-the-go.

3. Make & Practice Your Family Emergency Plan

An emergency plan is only effective if everyone knows it. Take time this month to create or review your family’s emergency plan. Identify the safest place in the house during severe weather, establish an outdoor meeting point in case of a fire, and make sure everyone knows who’s responsible for grabbing pets or important documents…and MOST IMPORTANTLY make sure to practice your plan (especially with your kiddos) a couple of times per year!

4. Locate Your Utility Shutoffs

Knowing where your water, gas, and electrical shutoffs are can save your home in case of a leak or fire. Take a few minutes to locate these shutoffs and make sure every family member knows how to operate them. In an emergency, shutting off utilities quickly can prevent larger damage or hazards.

5. Trim Trees and Clear Gutters

Falling branches and clogged gutters can lead to major damage during a storm. Trim back any overhanging trees and clean your gutters to ensure water flows away from your home. This simple maintenance task can prevent flooding and damage from flying debris.

The Green Machine 10″ Pole Saw Attachment is a great tool to get those hard-to-reach branches and limbs.

6. Secure Heavy Furniture

Whether it’s an earthquake or a child climbing, unsecured furniture can pose a danger. Anchor heavy furniture, like bookshelves and dressers, to the wall to prevent tipping. This will keep your home safer and give you peace of mind, especially in homes with young children.
